Basements tend to be dark; so, when decorating a basement wall, consider adding a light source as part of the decoration. For example, you could add candle sconces. These can be purchased as taper (tall, skinny candles) holders, or as votive (short, fat candles) holders. Try arranging votive holders in horizontal rows for a dramatic effect. For taper holders, try placing them on either side of a photograph or painting.
Another way to decorate a basement wall is to use mirrors to make the room look bigger and brighter. Try hanging a large, beautifully framed mirror in the middle of the wall, or several smaller, square mirrors across the wall in a row. Place small black and white photographs in between each mirror for an elegant effect. Alternately, try placing candles flanking a mirror. The light from the candles will reflect in the mirror, increasing the amount of light in the room. -
Basement walls are often concrete or brick. This makes it difficult to hang things on them. Some people choose to simply paint an interesting design on the wall instead, such as vertical stripes. Other people use concrete nails and anchors to hang heavy items.
If you are going to hang something light, such as a poster or picture that is not in a heavy frame, you can use sticky tack. It is a sticky, clay-like substance that can be purchased at any office supply store. It will stick to concrete and brick, holding up posters, bulletin boards or other lighter materials, and it can be easily removed without leaving a mark. -
Basements are often used for storage. If you need storage, consider decorating your basement wall with shelves. You can cover the wall entirely using a bookshelf, or you can do something a bit more elegant and hang floating shelves. Be sure to use concrete nails or screws if your walls are cement and you want to hang shelves.
Other creative ways to decorate a basement wall include installing drapes. You may not have a window, but drapes can be used for other purposes. For example, if you would like to hide ugly pipes or a heating unit, you can install drapes to float down along the wall and hide whatever it is you wish to cover up. You can hang the drapes with a standard curtain rod, or you could even use a shower curtain rod if the room is narrow enough.
