How Does Radon Affect Basements?
  1. Introduction

    • Many people understand the need for a smoke detector in their basement. But those same people may be in the dark about another household threat: radon. Radon can cause serious health problems if not detected and taken care of quickly. Have you checked your home for radon?

    What is Radon?

    • Radon is a gas that comes from the natural decaying process of elements (mainly uranium and radium) in the soil beneath your home. You may think that minerals like uranium are only found in a nuclear facility, but in reality both uranium and radium are found naturally in all 50 states (according to the National Safety Council). When radon gas forms, it is colorless, odorless and tasteless. These properties are what make it deadly. Many people have no idea that they have a radon problem until it's too late.

    Your Basement

    • So, how does radon get into your basement? Anytime that you have a crack in your basement you become at risk for radon. When the warm air in your home rises, it naturally creates a vacuum that sucks the warm air from the basement through the house to the attic. This suction creates enough force to pull any natural gasses (such as radon) out of the soil and into your home.

    Health Effects

    • The most commonly seen health effect of radon is lung cancer. Radon naturally emits alpha particles. If these particles are ingested and find ther way to the lungs, the particles may then activate lung cells to multiply and grow uncontrollably. These growths then become cancerous tumors.

    Testing

    • On average 1 in 15 homes tests positive for radon (according to the Environmental Protection Agency). With these statistics, home owners are encouraged to have their homes tested at least once every 5 years. Radon testing can be done using an "at-home" kit, or can be done by a professional. A professional is usually not needed unless you are trying to sell the home and are required to submit radon levels for the home. Most hardware stores carry radon testing kits. You can also call the National Safety Councils Hot Line at (800)767-7236 to order a low-cost radon testing kit.
