- Purchase new weather stripping. You can buy weather stripping at any local hardware store or home center. You can purchase weather stripping to seal the sides, top, and bottom of your door made of various materials including silicone, vinyl, and aluminum. When choosing your weather stripping it is important to consider the thickness needed to fill the gaps in your door.
- Remove old weather stripping. Before attaching the new weather stripping to your door remove all old preexisting weather stripping completely. Clean and dry the surface area where you will be attaching the new weather stripping.
- Cut new weather stripping to size. Carefully measure the length of weather stripping you will need for replacement. Make sure to plan for a tight fit so that air will not be able to penetrate the doors seal. If using self adhesive weather stripping do not remove backing before you make your cut.
- Attach new weather stripping to the door. Weather stripping comes in two basic varieties including self adhesive and mechanically attached. When using self adhesive stripping simply remove the paper backing and press into place. To secure mechanically attached weather stripping make sure your driver is equipped with the proper bit size and screw the stripping into position.
