How Does a Certified Project Management Professional Spend a Workday?
-
Planning
-
A project management professional develops plans to accomplish corporate goals. This project plan is collected in a living document called a project management plan. The project manager will likely refer to this document at least once during the day to check to make sure that the project is on track. If necessary, he may alter the plan in response to changing circumstances.
Communication
-
A project manager remains in constant communication with both employees and management. A skilled project manager cultivates open horizontal relationships with his team members, asking them what they need to perform their job effectively and then going to management to facilitate it.

Research
-
A project manager needs to constantly reference his plan to understand the demands of the marketplace. A project manager needs to be able to liaison potentially with both clients and other teams within the corporate structure. If a problem develops, the project manager is responsible for either developing a solution or getting in contact with someone who can while remaining on budget.
Negotiate
-
A project manager often finds himself in a position in which he must negotiate for additional funding beyond what was planned for a project. Even if raising the budget is not possible, he can communicate to upper management the consequences to the project and what steps they might take to accomplish the goals without needing additional resources.
