    Statistics

  1. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, peanut allergies affect 2 percent of our population. This particular allergy is found in children, several of whom will outgrow the allergy by adulthood. Of all the known food allergies, peanut allergies are the most responsible for deaths. An allergy to peanuts should be taken seriously, and any children found to have this type of allergy should completely remove peanuts, peanut oils and tree nuts from their diets.
  2. Atopic Dermatitis

  3. Atopic dermatitis, which is also commonly known as eczema, is one symptom that children with peanut allergies can experience. Whenever a child continues to consume peanuts, he breaks out in eczema patches that are red and itchy. Ointments can be prescribed to help the itch, but they cannot cure this condition. The good news is that, if the child finds out the eczema is caused by peanuts, he can stop eating peanuts and peanut products, and the eczema will clear up and go away. Children who have this condition for other reasons aren't so lucky.
  4. Chronic Urticaria

  5. Chronic urticaria is also commonly known as hives. Many types of allergies can cause a child to break out in hives, including an allergy to peanuts. Hives look like little red welts and itch very badly. They can be treated with products like benadryl, but as long as the peanuts are being consumed, the outbreaks will continue to happen. It is important to see a doctor to find out why your child is breaking out in hives. Simply avoiding the peanuts (if that is the cause) will get rid of the hives.
  6. Anaphylaxis

  7. The most serious reaction a child can have due to a peanut allergy is anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis can cause elevated blood pressure, trouble breathing, sweating, fast heart rate, cramps, nausea, pale skin, convulsions and loss of consciousness. Anaphylaxis can be very serious, especially if an individual can't breathe. If your child is having an anaphylaxis reaction, call for emergency help right away. The doctors at the hospital have medicine to combat these symptoms. Of course, you will be warned to avoid peanuts and peanut products in the future.
