    Introduction

  1. There are many different tasks that a jewelry business owner will perform in a day. These tasks vary according to the size and type of the business.
  2. Retailer and Distributor

  3. An owner of a jewelry retail outlet or jewelry distributor needs to make sure that products are properly displayed. This task involves using the best lighting and state of the art display structures to enhance the sparkle and overall appearance of the jewelry.

She pays close attention to the training of employees, be it on successful customer service or effective sales techniques for jewelry. For example, salespeople must know how to convince customers of why a diamond is a worthwhile investment.

A retail or distributor owner monitors current and new trends to ensure that she is selling the most popular and in-style jewelry of the moment. She looks in the jewelry section of the seasonal lookbooks of department stores, such as Bloomingdales or Neiman Marcus.

She may go on or plan a buying trip that involves visiting various exhibitions, such as the American Gem Expo in Lexington, Massachusetts and the Gem and Jewelry Show in Las Vegas.

She makes sure that the inventory is updated and in the process, courts regular and big clients. For example, if she receives a new collection from Cartier, she will call the regular clients who she knows prefer multicolored precious gemstones.
  4. Manufacturer

  5. There are at least two tasks specific to an owner of a jewelry manufacturer. She produces new jewelry designs herself or oversee the work of designers employed by the company. She meets with suppliers of materials used to make jewelry and makes strategic decisions, such as whether to buy white gold or platinum.
  6. Responsibilities of All Owners

  7. There are some tasks that an owner must perform, regardless of whether she is in charge of a retail outlet, distributor or manufacturer. She must oversee the marketing aspect of the business. This involves making strategic decisions regarding the prices of the jewelry, as well as how it is promoted and advertised. Her goal is to make the jewelry visible in the market, which is achieved in different ways. A distributor of Cartier jewelry would increase brand awareness by emphasizing the celebrities who regularly wear Cartier pieces. In addition, she has to make sure that all accounting-related information is in order, such as the profit generated by the jewelry pieces sold that day.
  8. Considerations

  9. All of the above-mentioned tasks can either be performed directly by the owner or delegated to a staff member and then monitored by the owner.
