Building a Roof Over a Deck

  1. Installing the Posts

    • The builder first installs the posts to support the roof. Most support posts can be installed on the deck frame using metal braces if the roof is not going to be too heavy. Once these are in place, the roof frame can be assembled.

    Assembling the Roof Frame

    • Using 4-by-2 or 6-by-2 boards creates a frame for the roof. This is built by laying frame boards about 6 inches apart perpendicular to two main frame boards, just like building a frame for a wall. Nails and screws are used to fasten the frame together.

    Covering the Roof

    • The roof frame is covered with plywood and rubber roofing material--or simple plastic sheeting, whichever is preferred. The plywood and rubber is secured to the frame using roofing nails. Then the roof is covered with shingles.

Hoisting the Roof onto the Frame

    • The next task is to hoist the roof onto the supports. This requires a small crane or several strong hands. The roof is lifted up and over the support posts, then steadily fit onto the support. The roof is fastened to the supports using long 3-inch nails or screws that are hammered or screwed through the roof frames and into the posts. Additional bracing is added if necessary in the form of metal braces or 2-by-4 boards all around the support braces.
