Installing Aluminum Fence Posts
  1. Preparing to Install Your Fence Posts

    • Before starting a fencing project always check with your municipalities building code office to see if there is a permit required to put up a fence. They will also let you know about their setback rules. Call the utility companies to come and mark where any wires or pipes are in your yard if you have any underground utilities. Find your copy of your survey so you can mark off your boundary lines. If you don't have a survey you may want to have one done so you don't encroach on someone else's property with your fence.

Installing the Corner, End and Gate Posts

    • Find your corner and end post locations. Drive stakes into the ground a little longer than your fence will be. Hang string between the stakes so that it doesn't touch the ground. Where the string crosses will be where you will set your corner posts. End posts go up against your house or a neighboring fence. You will install these posts first to determine where your line posts will be placed. Dig your post holes 6 inches across and two feet deep with a post hole digger. Go straight down; do not slope outwards at the top. Fill about 16 inches of the hole with concrete and set your post. Check the plumb and level of the post. Now pack the rest of the hole with the dirt you dug out of the hole.

    Install the Line Posts

    • String a line from your corner posts to another corner, end or gate post. Measure out 72 inches from the corner and dig a hole directly under the string for your line post. Dig the holes in the same manner as you did the corner posts. Continue every 72 inches or shorter if you're coming up on a new corner or end. Fill the holes with concrete, set your post and fill with dirt. Allow the cement to dry for 24 to 48 hours, depending on weather before you begin to install the fencing.
