    What is a Ring tone?

  1. A ring tone is an audio file that is either MP3 or a special format for your phone. There are two different types of ring tones, polyphonic, and MP3. Polyphonic is a ring tone that uses sound tones to create a jingle, you will never get voice, only notes from this ring tone. MP3 ring tones will have the voice and music as a ring tone.
  2. Convert the MP3 to Ring Tone

  3. Depending on the phone, there is a limit to how much time it can hold for a ring tone; usually it is 30 seconds. You will need to check your phone's instruction manual for this information. Most phones have a cable that you can buy to connect the phone to your computer, and convert the ring tone to the format that your phone will recognize. Once connected, you will use the software to pick what section of the song you want as the ring tone. If your phone does not have this capability, there is another way.
  4. Getting Ring Tones Online

  5. If your phone does not have cables to connect it to the computer, you can purchase ring tones through your carrier. These will be sent to the phone as a download and stored in the phone. To do this, either call your carrier's customer service line. For most carriers, it means simply dialing 611. Some phones have online capability to shop for ring tones within the phone's browser. If you are unsure how to do this within the phone, the instruction manual or a call to the company's customer service can help guide you.
