How Does a Bathtub Nozzle Work?
-
The bathtub nozzle allows water to flow into the bathtub, or to be blocked so it flows out of the shower head. While older faucets use washers, newer models use cartridges to control the water. The cartridge, or washer, that is inside your faucet allows the water to flow when the handle is turned, and prevents water from flowing when the handle is turned off. It seals the faucet closed so water cannot pass through. When the washer, or cartridge, gets old, it may clog or wear out, and will then being to leak.
How Do You Fix a Leaky Bathtub Nozzle?
-
If you notice your bathtub faucet is dripping, take it apart and clean it. The cartridge may have to be replaced if the problem persists, even after it has been cleaned. You are most likely to run into this problem when a new bathtub is installed. The debris from the installation can get caught in the cartridge of the faucet. For tubs with a washer in them, the washer may have to be replaced completely. Try cleaning the washer, and check it for chips or cracks. While this may fix the problem, a washer usually doesn't start leaking until it is old and worn out. If this is the case, there is nothing to do but install a new one.

How Does the Faucet Divider on a Bathtub Nozzle Work?
-
A divider is also installed in a faucet that has a shower attached. This lets the water be divided between the bathtub and the shower. You can choose if your want the water to run out of the faucet, or out of the shower head. To use this, you only have to flip a lever, or pull a metal piece on the bathtub faucet straight up. The lever will catch and stay in this upright position. This creates a seal inside the faucet that blocks the water from flowing out the faucet. The water pressure builds and forces the water out of the shower head. When you push the lever back down, the water returns to the bathtub faucet as the water pressure is relieved.
