How Does a Blow Up Mattress Work?

Blow Up Mattress

A blow up mattress is also called an air mattress. It is a portable mattress that can be inflated for use and deflated for convenient storage. These mattresses are usually made out of nylon or latex. More expensive models have a soft covering on the top for comfort. They come in different sizes, similar to conventional mattresses. You can purchase a blow up mattress in a twin size, full size, queen size or king size. Blow up mattresses are convenient for camping, use as a spare bed for guests, or use situations where a portable bed is necessary. When the bed is not needed, it can be deflated, folded or rolled up and stored.

Inflating a Blow Up Mattress

A blow up mattress has a valve that is used for inflating and deflating. Theoretically, a blow up mattress could be inflated manually by using your mouth to blow air into the valve, but this would take a very long time and a lot of work. The practical way to blow up an air mattress is to use an air pump. Some blow up mattresses come with an air pump, others do not. Inexpensive air pumps can be purchased separately.
To inflate a blow up mattress, pull out the valve cover. Hook up the air pump nozzle to the valve and inflate the mattress until it is firm. When the mattress is full enough to be comfortable, push the valve cover back in to stop the air from escaping.

Deflating and Storing a Blow Up Mattress

To deflate a blow up mattress, pull out the valve cover and allow the air to escape. Lightly pushing on the mattress helps the air to escape faster. Once the mattress is fully deflated, it can be folded or rolled up. Store the deflated mattress in a protected location where it will not get punctured.

Changes in temperature can cause the blow up mattress to seem less or more inflated. Adjust the firmness of the mattress by adding air or opening the valve to allow some of the air to escape. Blow up mattresses are vulnerable to punctures. If the mattress is leaking air, you can repair the hole with a patch kit. If the mattress did not come with a patch kit, you can purchase one at the store in the section where you bought the blow up mattress. Patch kits contain a piece of nylon with an adhesive that can be put over the hole in the mattress to stop the leak.
