How Does Toe Fungus Occur?
  1. Introduction

    • Not taking adequate care of your feet can be a quick invitation for toe fungus to make itself at home in your toenails. Known as onychomycosis, a fungal infection of the toe can cause discolored nails, brittle nail composition as well as other issues, depending on the type of fungus contracted. Toe fungus does not usually go away on its own and can easily occur under the right conditions.

    Environment

    • Toe fungus is part of the dermatophytes. This means that they thrive in damp warm environments. Showers, swimming pools and locker rooms can be havens for the fungus.

    Infection

    • All the fungus needs is a small cut or skin opening to take hold, multiply, and grow. It can inhabit the small area between your nail and your nail bed. Most shoes do not have an adequate amount of airflow, so the fungus can easily continue to thrive once it takes up residence on your feet.

    Areas

    • Fungus can occur on both the toes and the fingers. However, fungus tends to thrive better on the toenails because less blood flows to your toes than to your fingers. Reduced blood flow means decreased ability for the body to detect infection and fight infection.

    Risk

    • Certain factors increase your risk of developing toe fungus. Wearing shoes or socks that do not promote ventilation can contribute to a fungal infection. Also, walking in moist or damp environments without shoes or at least sandals can contribute to fungal infections. This is especially true in public areas, such as locker rooms or public showers.

    Damage

    • Left untreated, toe fungus can cause permanent damage to your toe nails. It can also invite other types of more serious infections that may cause serious health issues. Those with depressed immune systems due to chemotherapy, HIV/AIDS or diabetes may also be at risk for more serious infections due to complications from the toe fungus.
