    Typical Workday

  1. An independent doll maker spends her time, drawing designs and working her way through getting the dolls from designs on paper to finished dolls. Her work may also involve working with doll patterns made by other designers. The specific process used in making the dolls depends on which medium she is working with.

Some of the doll maker's day is also spent in purchasing the necessary craft supplies needed in making dolls. She also spends time marketing her dolls to specialty stores and individuals, receiving orders and responding to client and customer questions and concerns.

The doll maker also makes time for other administrative tasks involved in running a small business, such as keeping records, paying bills, accounting, advertising and networking.
  2. Learning the Trade

  3. There are various ways to learn to become a doll maker. Most people learn by working as apprentices with experienced doll makers. If you are interested in becoming a doll maker a good place to start is to contact a doll maker whose work you admire and ask if she is offering classes. There are also classes in local craft stores, craft centers and community colleges. Some doll-making classes are also online. The Crafty College website provides a number of doll-making classes.
