How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?

  1. Choose a Product

    • Affiliate marketing is the process whereby you promote a company's or entrepreneur's product and receive a commission for each sale you make. Choosing a product to promote requires careful consideration. Obviously, your goal in promoting an affiliate product is to make money, but you also want to cultivate a reputation for promoting quality products. Be sure that you get a review copy of the product you are considering promoting to ensure that it is high quality and provides information for which your target marketing is looking for.
When considering what product to promote, think about your target market or the group to whom you are selling the product. What problem is your target market trying to solve? What question do they want answered? Identifying your target market's problem or question will make it easier for you to find a product to promote that they can use.
Another consideration is the commission offered. Affiliate programs offer anywhere from 50 to 100 percent of the product price in commission. Choose a product that has a decent commission but that isn't already being promoted by hundreds or even thousands of other affiliate marketers.
You can find products to promote at Commission Junction, Clickbank, or even by contacting the product owner (see Resources below). Large companies, such as Amazon.com, also have affiliate programs you can join.

    Become an Affiliate

    • When you sign up as an affiliate, you are given a unique affiliate link that you will then use on your Web page and in your promotional efforts. Every time a customer clicks on your link and makes a purchase, you earn a commission.
Before you sign up for an affiliate program, make sure you determine the amount of the commission, how you will be paid and how often. You should never have to pay a fee to sign up as an affiliate. If you cannot find answers about payment, consider finding another product to promote instead.

    Promote the Product

    • Promoting a product is the most important part of affiliate marketing. You cannot simply sign up as an affiliate, publish a Web page and expect to make money. Success at affiliate marketing requires both work and persistence. Some affiliate programs provide their affiliates with a Web page, sales page and other promotional tools to help their affiliates get started.
In addition, you have numerous free and paid means to promote an affiliate product. Free ways to market an affiliate product include writing and submitting relevant articles to free article directories, blogging, posting on relevant forums, email marketing and participating in such social networking platforms as Digg and Twitter.
If you have a budget, you can quickly get your ad in front of potential customers by using pay-per-click advertising, such as Google AdWords or Yahoo! Search Marketing (see Resources below). Pay-per-click advertising is by far the easiest and one of the most popular ways to quickly drive traffic to an affiliate website.
The key to your success as an affiliate marketer is to aggressively market the products. For example, you can't just submit one article to article marketing sites and expect traffic to flood in. You must consistently submit articles if you want to make money at affiliate marketing.
