How Does a Hypnotist Spend a Workday?
Professional Duties
-
Hypnosis is mostly famous for stage hypnosis, where a hypnotist performs the craft in front of crowds of people and enlist volunteers from the audience to be hypnotized. However, more often than not, this form of hypnosis is fake and not performed by a real, certified hypnotist. Actual hypnosis has been found effective for many applications other than entertainment. A hypnotist can work in psychology, medicine, relaxation therapy, habit control and forensics.
Hypnotherapy and Medicine
-
Hypnosis used to be thought of as a state of unconsciousness, but it is now thought to be a state of wakefulness with focused attention and heightened suggestibility. As such, the hypnotist has had success in providing therapeutic treatment to clients. A hypnotherapist meets with clients to help them lose weight, quit smoking, reduce stress and enhance sports performance through suggestive hypnosis treatments. Hypnotherapy has also been used to help treat patients with irritable bowel syndrome and skin diseases, such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.
Forensics
-
In states where it is permitted, a hypnotist can work in forensics helping recover memories of victims and witnesses in both criminal and civil cases. These hypnotic sessions are usually recorded, and typically have attorneys from both sides present. A forensic hypnotist will also have to testify in court about any investigative hypnotic sessions performed.
