How Does a Home-Based Business Owner Spend a Workday?
  1. Types of Home-Based Business Owners

    • There are different types of home-based business. Some offer services; others offer product. Many deliver their product or service, while others do everything via computer. Some people run their business part time, and others work more than a full-time schedule. All of these variables change the way they prioritize their day. But for the most part, balancing the schedule is probably the hardest task.

    Mornings

    • People with children normally start their workday earlier than those who don't. They have to get up and get the family set for the day, and because they are usually involved with after-school activities and taking care of the children's needs until they go to bed, they need the extra time in the morning. Normally, the first thing most home-based business owners do in the morning is check their email. They see if they have new orders or assignments that they can add to their "to do" list. If they have any emails that need responses, they take care of that next. Then they can place orders for their product or separate what they need from their stock to fill orders and box it up. Mornings are also a good time to work on marketing for their business. Ideas come at all times of the day, but you aren't always able to stop what you're doing and work on them. Mornings are great because you haven't been too distracted yet and are still sharp from a good night's sleep.

    Afternoons

    • If you have an Internet business, afternoons are a great time to do your Internet tasks and assignments. For other businesses online and offline, it's a good time to start making phone calls. Some people work and won't be at home; others have children in school, so it's a perfect time to talk. The phone schedule has to be broken up into two parts--day and evening. Late afternoons are a good time to make deliveries. They will start with the households that have someone at home and end with the people who are just getting home from work. For the home business owner who sends out product through the mail or Internet, the afternoon is normally when he takes care of this. Then he checks and responds to email again.

    Evenings

    • If the home-based business owner has a business that requires a demonstration of a product, most of this is done in the evenings after people have gotten home from work and eaten dinner. The next priority for the evening is to set up for the next day. The business owner will make a 'to do" list and add what she didn't finish today. It's also the second part of making the phone calls. Most people who have a home-based business also work on their bookkeeping in the evening. Some like to talk to other home-based business owners in the evening to brainstorm ways to make their business grow.
