Customer surveys are a form of consumer research which can act as a powerful tool to help a business run effectively. Every business provides some type of product or service to some type of customer or client in order to bring in revenue. In order for a business to be successful, there must be sufficient demand for the product or service offered, and those demanding the company's offerings must also be willing to pay an amount that will allow the company to profit. Before even launching a business, a new product or service within a business, giving out surveys to potential customers about the new product or service can help determine whether it will be an economically viable pursuit.

Perhaps the most common use of customer surveys is as feedback for services or products that have already been purchased. The main purpose to these surveys is to determine how satisfied the customers are with the products or services. Most survey forms will have fields where customers can suggest places for improvement. If several customers suggest the same thing, the company can use this information to offer improved products. Before making changes based on feedback, however, it is a good idea to survey customers about the change before it takes place. It could be that a small group of people want a change, while a larger group of satisfied customers would not want the change at all.
