What is Cockscomb?
-
Cockscomb are vibrant flowers, sometimes known as wool flowers or brain celosia. Cockscomb is a member of the Amaranthaceae family. Cockscomb's name is derived from its appearance, which is similar to a rooster's crest. The name "Wool Flower" is also derivative of its appearance, having the appearance of spun wool. Cockscomb is suspected to have originated in Africa. Cockscomb flowers dry beautifully and are frequently featured in bouquets because of their strong, thick stems that allow the flower to stay upright for a longer amount of time than most cut flowers.
Where Does Cockscomb Grow?

Cockscomb flowers grow best in hot and dry conditions, like the western United States. Although it is possible to grow cockscomb flowers in northern areas during the summer months, they will probably not grow as large as they would in more year-round, temperate climates. If cockscomb flowers get too dry, however, they may wilt and die, so keep the soil as moist as possible if you are growing the flowers in particularly dry conditions, such as desert areas. Rather than watering the entire flower, water only the soil if possible to keep the bloom and leaves from developing fungal infections.

How Does Cockscomb Grow?
-
If you are growing cockscomb from seed in a window box, it grows best when planted in April, or when the temperature is about 50 degrees. If you are planning to plant cockscomb in a garden or another location with open soil, plant the seeds in May, or when the temperature is about 60 degrees. If you live in a more temperate climate, you can plant cockscomb year round. Cockscomb is an annual flower, meaning it will only bloom one time and will need to be planted again after the frost. If desired, you can purchase ready-to-plant cockscomb on a flat at your local nursery or garden supply store. Because cockscomb flowers grow best in temperate climates, do not get discouraged if you live in a northern climate and have trouble growing cockscomb flowers from seed your first time. With experience, you will be able to tell the best time to plant cockscomb from seed in your area.
