How Does Hypothyroidism Affect Reproduction?
-
T-Cells
-
Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the body does not produce enough thyroid hormone. Untreated hypothyroidism affects reproduction because the hormones and chemicals that stimulate the ovaries are not released by the thyroid, which may result in the absence of menstrual periods.
Once the patient has had a thyroid panel (blood work) conducted and has been tested for TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) levels, medication such as Levothyroxine or Synthroid, a synthetic form of T-Cell hormones may be prescribed to replace those that are not naturally present.
Hypothyroidism and Infertility
-
Hypothyroidism may cause infertility due to the adverse effects of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), the development of small ovarian cysts that reduce the chances of pregnancy. Endometriosis--an abnormality in the mucous lining of the uterus---is another a cause of infertility associated with hypothyroidism.

Pregnancy and Retardation
-
Babies born to women unaware they are suffering from hypothyroidism are at high risk of complications such as mental retardation. Women undergoing thyroid replacement therapy in the form of synthetic medications such as Levothyroxine, should discuss their conditions and medications with their physicians and follow all recommendations carefully.
