What are Orthotics?
-
The literal definition of orthotics, is a medical field which involves the use synthetic devices, such as braces, or mechanical devices, in order to stabilize, heal, or prevent injury and deformity to weak joints or bones. Since by far the most common type of orthotic devices in use have to do with promoting healthy feet, the term orthotics is often used synonymously with the field as it applies to foot health, or the actual devices used to promote foot health, which are technically called orthoses. Foot orthotics usually take the form of specialized insoles, which are often custom made to precisely fit the needs of the user.
Types of foot Orthotics
-
Foot orthotics are meant to reduce foot pain and possible deformity caused be the stress of weight on the feet, by brining them into proper alignment and providing support in problem spots. There are two basic types of orthotics used to achieve these ends: those designed to change the way the feet function (for patients whose normal walking is unbalanced and harmful) and those designed to prevent injury and incorrect function. To achieve these ends, orthotics come in many different materials and shapes: some are composed of rigid plastic which help control foot function, some are made of soft rubbery material, which aid with the impact of walking on the feet, while others lie somewhere in between, promoting the development and strengthening o supporting muscles and tendons. Pre-made orthotic insoles can be purchased at some sports stores and pharmacies, or can be custom made by a specialist.

Benefits of using Orthotics
-
The primary benefit of using orthotics is the elimination of foot pain and soreness through the proper aligning, support and strengthening of the feet. They help the feet move in an ergonomically sound manner, reversing and preventing muscular and skeletal damage and deformity. Orthotics are especially common and useful among older people who may develop arthritis in their feet and have weaker muscles and bones. Orthotics also help to reduce foot fatigue and provide support for unforeseen stresses, which can be especially beneficial to athletes, increasing endurance, and reducing the chance of injuries.
