How Does a Pilates Instructor Spend a Workday?
-
One-on-One Training
-
A Pilates instructor can spend all or a portion of the workday training individual clients either at a central location or in client homes. He may choose to offer 30-, 45- or 60-minute sessions.
Group Sessions
-
In addition to one-on-one sessions, a Pilates instructor may spend a portion of the workday teaching group classes at local fitness centers. In addition to classes, Pilates instructors may present or take part in workshops, seminars and conventions, where they give Pilates demonstrations or share information about Pilates.
-
Keeping Up to Date
-
Pilates is an ever changing field in the fitness industry, so instructors need to be on top of current trends, new exercises and methods. A Pilates instructor may spend part of the workday networking with other instructors, attending workshops or classes, and reading materials in order to maintain any certifications and increase her value as an instructor.
Administrative Work
-
Depending on whether the Pilates instructor is self-employed or works for a specific company, there are administrative functions that must be attended to throughout the workday. Completing contracts, obtaining and maintaining insurance, bookkeeping, and scheduling are all part of the workday.
Getting the Word Out
-
Self-employed Pilates instructors spend time creating promotional materials, advertisements and developing strategies for business growth. This can include networking, in person and online; creating instructional videos; and writing informational articles for local media and national publications.
