    Staff management

  1. The owner of a small answering service company will spend many hours of her day managing her staff. She will set schedules, help find replacements for operators who call in sick, hire and fire employees and train new hires. If she is running a business out of her home as the sole operator, she will focus on managing her schedule and setting goals.
  2. Customer service

  3. An answering service owner who works alone out of his home will spend the majority of his day on customer service. He will answer incoming calls and relay messages to the client. The owner of a larger company will often still spend time directly interacting with callers, either to fill in when there's a staff shortage, or to intervene when there is a problem call.
  4. Money management

  5. Another important part of the business owner's day is budgeting and paying bills. The owner of a home-based business must purchase and maintain equipment, spend some money advertising for new clients, pay for telephone services and bill clients for services rendered. The owner of a large answering service will spend money on those same items as well as managing payroll for her employees.
  6. Marketing

  7. When establishing a new company, the owner of an answering machine business must market his services. After a client base has been established, the owner will have to continue marketing and advertising efforts, because some clients will leave and have to be replaced. Business owners will also contact their customers when rates change or when the business is able to offer additional options and services.
  8. Technology

  9. An answering service business owner must invest in telephones, headsets and other technology when establishing a business. After a time, the owner will also have to arrange for repairs and upgrades. She will have to spend time researching the standard equipment used, any special features a client might request and how to get the best prices on the needed equipment.
