    Introduction

  1. A network cable technician is responsible for maintaining and servicing telephone and other network services. Some of the job duties involve the more technical and design-based aspects of network maintenance and development. A good network technician is versatile in his knowledge and skilled at network-cable repair and installation.
  2. Network Cable Design and Implementation Technician

  3. There are a host of duties and responsibilities a network cable technician must perform. One area of his job includes the design and implementation of complex network cable wiring systems. He also assists in the coordination, installation and implementation of these wires. But for these duties, greater expertise is needed, which is why this type of work is left for the top-level technicians.

The day of a top-level network cable technician is spent inside, instead of outside, the building. For new installation orders in locations where cable hasn't before been installed , the technician maps out a cable route using the blueprints of the building and the design specs. If more information is needed, a visit to the client's location may be conducted. Using flowcharts to show how the cable will be mapped out in the building, the technician holds a meeting with the installation techs, supervisors and a network engineer to make sure the plans are plausible. The technician then returns to do more work on the plans if changes are needed, or to consult with the client for approval.

Another duty of this type of network cable technician is to stay educated on any newly updated equipment and procedures. Before sending the upgrades to customers, the technician conducts extensive tests on them to make sure they are safe and ready to be installed.
  4. Installation, Maintenance and Repair Network Technician

  5. The duties of the basic network cable technician are much more routine. At the start of the workday, the technician picks up all of the work orders that must be completed that day. Next, she makes sure her service trucks are equipped with the necessary tools and equipment to complete the orders. She leaves for a day of completing the following types of orders:

    • Find and troubleshoot problems n lines and cables using diagnostic equipment
    • Plan the location and relocation of network hardware
    • Install Cisco routers and switches
    • Inspect data wiring and certify safety after conducting required tests
    • Repair and install other telephony-related equipment, including video multiplexes, interconnecting devices, network platforms, hardware and wiring plants.

During the day, technicians may be called to emergency jobs. Other orders may be canceled or rescheduled. This is why a network cable technician has to be prepared for change and unexpected situations.
