- Buying a big screen HDTV is one of the latest consumer trends, and while such screens a joy to behold, many people have difficulty finding room for them. In the age of widening screen sizes and shrinking screen thickness, many HDTVs have come to the point where they are thin enough to put on the wall like a picture frame. TV mounts are sturdy structures of metal and plastic that can be fastened to the wall to provide a secure place to TV without needing to find the space for another piece of furniture in the form of a large TV stand. Using and mount saves space while adding a modern look to a room.
- An HDTV mount for large screens usually consists of two vertical brackets, which are connected by a thicker sturdy piece of metal. To secure the mount to the wall, the mount is screwed directly into wall studs. When installing a mount, use a stud finder to ensure that you are screwing into a stud, since missing a stud will make a mount much less stable and might cause it to fall off under the load of a TV. Once the mount is secured, a hole can be drilled in the wall for wires if desired. Then the TV can be mounted: most often this involves placing mounts on the back of the TV and sliding them into grooves on the brackets of the wall mount, which they hook around. The weight of the TV will keep it firmly held in by the mount.
- Whether to mount a TV or not has mostly to due with aesthetics and the space requirements of a room. A room in which devices are constantly hooked up to the TV would probably be better served by a normal TV stand, as wires are less accessible on a mounted TV. A room that is set up for watching TV or movies is an ideal place for a mounted TV. If a room is small, a mounted TV can grant some additional space for viewing. Drilling into the wall and messing around with wiring is a deterrent for many people when deciding whether to mount or not; and for those who rent, it makes mounting less attractive as well, since they are not always at liberty to undertake such projects. Also, if one has small children or pets, mounting can help to keep the TV and wires out of reach.
