How Do Scan Disk Card Readers Work?

  1. Reads Multiple Cards

    • Scan disk card readers usually feature more than one size slot, for the insertion of different sizes and shapes of memory cards. The cards will fit into the slots only one way so that the little, metal contact points on the card will line up perfectly with similar metal contacts inside the card reader. Once the card is in the reader, the reader must be plugged into the USB port of your computer. A small menu window will appear asking you what you want to do with the information and how you want it extracted from the reader.

    No External Software

    • These devices do not have external software included in the package. The computer is able to extract the program from a computer chip installed within the card reader that is programmed to recognize certain types of memory cards and the first time the reader is used the computer will automatically install the software from that chip. Thereafter, that computer will recognize the device every time it is used. If you have multiple devices using memory chips the same uploading reader can be used for each of them as long as the reader is able to read that particular card.

    Simple to Use

    • The card reader extracts the digital information from the memory card, then organizes the information and sends it to the computer for uploading. If your computer already has a built-in memory card reader you won't need to buy the separate reader. Just insert the card into the slot and select choices from the menu that appears on the screen. If you use a laptop computer you will most likely require a separate device in order to upload your pictures and other digital information.
