Fashion design internships provide priceless experience and job connections in the highly competitive world of fashion design. Doing well as an intern can jump-start your career.

Fashion design interns have the unique opportunity to observe and even participate in the creation of a line of clothing or accessories, from start to finish.

Daily responsibilities will vary from house to house and will depend on your specialty, whether it's dressmaking, menswear, accessories or jewelry.
  2. Handwork, Computer Skills, Adminstrative Duties

  3. Fashion design interns commonly spend part of the day using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, skills that will deepen the intern's involvement in the design process. For example, a designer may ask an intern to create an image showing a range of fabrics and colors on an existing design.

An intern's daily responsibilities may include running errands for trims, fabrics and buttons. You may also do light filing and other administrative tasks.

Interns often assist designers in the development and production of a collection. In this process, the intern's pattern making and draping skills may be put to use. If it's an accessories design internship, hand sewing and embroidery skills may be used.
  4. Merchandising, Detailing and Design

  5. Interns may also spend part of the day creating merchandising boards with special fabrics and sketches, using Photoshop or Illustrator.

Interns may also assist with merchandising in the designer's showroom, research design ideas and concepts, and assist with trim approvals throughout all stages of the design.

Interns may be involved in fabric pricing, organizing workroom supplies, the basic construction of a garment, or sewing beads and sequins on a dress.

An internship in fashion design will likely involve a combination of these tasks, which will vary according to the designer's needs for that day.
