While iPods that are purchased in the United States can be used overseas, there are a few potential issues and problems. In most computers, both in North America and throughout the world, peripherals connect via USB ports. This makes linking up a North American-bought iPod to a European computer relatively easy. The other issue may be software compatibility. Apple distributes different versions of its software in different countries. While in theory these different versions are compatible with one another, there may be occasional issues and glitches when using an iPod from one country in another region.

Voltage differences

There are a few differences between electrical sockets in North American and those overseas. Certain countries, such as United States and Canada, use 120 volt power supplies. Meanwhile, the rest of the world predominantly uses 220 or 240 volt power sources. This is not a problem for iPod power supplies that run through computers, as the voltage is automatically converted. However, for wall chargers or for portable iPod docking stations, these voltage differences can cause difficulties. Some wall chargers are compatible with these higher voltages, so the voltage difference won't be a problem. These chargers are designed to handle it. On the other hand, some chargers are unable to handle this kind of voltage. High voltage will cause these chargers to burn out, rendering them useless. In these cases, a voltage converter can be purchases which will lower the voltage that these chargers receive, allowing them to be used.

Different Kinds of Plugs

The type of plug that connects into wall sockets varies from country to country. As a result, when taking an iPod charger from one country to another, an adapter may be necessary to plug the device into different wall sockets. These attachments can typically be bought at the airport and often come as part of a voltage converter package.
