How Does a Beauty Supply Store Owner Spend a Workday?
-
Introduction--Beginning the Day
-
A beauty supply store owner starts his workday by opening the store and making sure the closing employees left the store presentable for the day's sales. He will walk through the store, giving everything a cursory look, making sure there is plenty of stock on the shelves and the store is clean. He will then stock the register with a set amount of cash for change--or if he has many employees, he will provide each employee's individual cash drawer with a set amount of cash.
Administrative
-
Once the employees arrive, the beauty supply store owner will check her phone messages and emails for any special or bulk orders. If she has a website, orders may come in from beauty shops through the website. She will either have an employee pack the orders to get ready for pickup, or she will pack them herself. Once that is completed, the beauty supply store owner will move on to other administrative tasks. Tasks such as payroll, employee benefit updates and filing sales tax are generally not daily jobs, but as part of the beauty supply store owner's job these must be done at least once during the week.

Inventory
-
The beauty supply store owner will check inventory throughout the day. He will check to be sure that nothing is running low by running reports garnered through the point of sale terminal. Once or twice a week, he will take a physical count of the entire inventory on the shelves and in the storeroom. From the counts and the point of sale information, the beauty supply store owner will create order sheets for various wholesale suppliers, then either call or fax in the order. When the order arrives, he will count the new pieces to be sure he received all that he ordered. He will then either place the inventory in its proper spot or direct an employee to place the inventory in its proper spot.
Customer Service
-
The beauty supply store owner may work the front counter, working with customers and making sales if the employees need help. She also deals with any customer complaints, if any. If a walk-in customer needs help in choosing products, the beauty supply store owner will make suggestions on certain products she thinks is best for that particular customer's needs.
Miscellaneous Duties
-
Before the beauty supply store owner leaves for the day, he will take deposits to the bank and make sure there are plenty of employees staffed for the rest of the day and the next day. He will generally make an employee schedule a week or more ahead of time. He may have to make daily or weekly changes to the schedule.
He will also run any reports needed for the accountant (monthly) and other financial reports required by governmental agencies (hazardous waste disposal, city, county and state taxes and employee taxes).
