Medication to Treat the Underlying Causes

While the above medications treat the pain and itching associated with hemorrhoids, they are not as effective at actually eliminating or preventing them. If the cause of the hemorrhoids is due to excessive straining during bowel movements, then taking stool softeners and eating more fiber may help reduce the straining. If the cause is due to high blood pressure, taking blood pressure lowering medications can help shrink and eliminate and the hemorrhoids. Losing weight can help if the hemorrhoids are obesity-related.
