How Does a Moving Company Owner Spend a Workday?
-
Introduction
-
A moving company owner can have a diverse day, depending on the size of his company. If he has a small company, chances are he will have one employee to help him, and he will do most of the work himself. A moving company owner that owns a large company generally stays in the office throughout the day, and has enough employees to do the work in the field. A moving company owner of a large company generally spends his day doing all of the administrative tasks, but the owner of a small moving company must do all of the administrative tasks in addition to working in the field.
Administrative Duties
-
Administrative duties for all sizes of moving companies include employee payroll, updating employee benefits such as insurance benefits and in-house benefits, including time off. The moving company owner will also schedule himself or his staff to move people, return calls to people regarding scheduling and complaints, if any. He will make bank deposits, run tax reports, sale reports, and run a monthly profit and loss statement, or forward sales information to his accountant.

Field Duties
-
The moving company owner drives to each account and packs up the homeowner's furniture into the moving van. Most of the smaller things should already be packed by the homeowner. After driving to the new home, the moving company owner will unpack the truck and place the furniture into the room as the homeowner specifies. A move could take a few hours or all day, depending on how much furniture and boxes the homeowner has. Once finished with the moves scheduled for the day, the moving company owner will make sure his truck is filled with gas, cleaned out, and ready to go for the next day's work.
-
The moving company owner must make sure all of his equipment is in good working order, including the moving truck and any hand trucks, blankets, and straps used during the moving process. He will check all of the equipment every day to make sure it is safe to use (i.e. no worn belts or broken hand trucks.) The moving truck must also be kept in good working order, so the moving company owner must do any maintenance on the truck, including oil changes, tire maintenance, and engine maintenance.
