  1. Transcribe Documents

    • Stenographers use shorthand to transcribe documents, usually in a legal setting. They use machines called stenotype machines that allow them to press multiple keys at once to record shorthand dictation. The shorthand symbols automatically translated into text and displayed on a computer screen. Most stenographers are court reporters who transcribe verbatim legal proceedings, depositions and court testimony. However, stenographers are sometimes used in other settings, such as press conferences, training seminars and sales meetings.

    Assist Trial Attorneys and Judges

    • Often during a trial or a lengthy hearing, an attorney or a judge will need a portion of testimony read back. The stenographer will have to quickly search for the portion of testimony throughout the lengthy record and read aloud the portion requested. They will have to do this at a moment's notice, so they need to be very familiar with the testimony they are transcribing.

Ensure a Complete and Accurate Record

    • Stenographers are responsible for keeping a complete and accurate record of the dictation they transcribe. If they miss a word during a proceeding, they must stop the proceeding and ask that it be repeated. Every word must be recorded; nothing can be left out, especially in a court proceeding or official document like a deposition. In addition to creating a complete record, stenographers are responsible for storing the records and providing any copies if requested.
