How Does an Area Rug Add to a Homes Decor?
-
Define a Seating Area
-
An open living area might include the kitchen, living room and dining room. A home constructed in this manner feels as though it is larger than it actually is, which most people prefer. Area rugs can add to the room décor by defining the individual space. An area rug beneath the dining room table would anchor it in the space. Another area rug placed in the living room separates it from the other two spaces in the open living area while making a perimeter for the furniture.
When choosing two area rugs that will fit within the same living space, pick two different sizes. If they are the same size, your room will appear to be cut in half. It's important to choose a similar pattern and colors for both area rugs.
Choose a Color Scheme
-
Choose your room's color scheme from an area rug you've fallen in love with. Decorate around your rug, making it the focal point, by choosing three colors within the pattern. Use one color for the largest pieces of furniture, another color for an accent chair, a sofa throw and other larger accessories. Use the third color, which is usually the brightest color for smaller accent. Choose a fourth color in the area rug for the wall paint color.
For example, you have chosen an area rug with a pattern containing tan, green, rust, brown and cream. The cream is chosen for the sofa and matching chair, green is chosen for the accent chair and other larger accents in the room, rust is chosen as the smaller accent color and tan is chosen for the walls. Finish the room off with patterned throw pillows matching the colors and pattern style of the throw rug. You can also use an area rug as wall art and treat it in the same manner, as the focal point of the room.

Tone, Warmth and Texture
-
An area rug will add warmth and softness to any room with a tile or wood floor. Room décor works best when there are varying textures throughout. A rug can give the room an alternate texture. A shag rug will add a different texture than a short pile one.
A floral patterned area rug will give your room a comfortable, relaxed setting. There are florals that will match a country décor or a make a more formal design friendlier. A bold pattern and color in an area rug adds a spicy, modern feel to a room. A sheep skin or shag rug warms and soften a room with otherwise modern or contemporary lines.
