Increase Square Footage
Sunrooms can add to the value of a home by increasing the amount of square footage that is considered living space. Because they are often cheaper and quicker to build than traditional home additions, they are a cost-effective way to add important square footage, especially if your home is small. They are also an excellent way of bringing natural light into the entire house, making existing rooms appear larger and more open. If the sunroom is connected to the central heating and air conditioning of the home, the value increases even more. Sunrooms can be used for a variety of purposes and can be furnished to create additional living space, dining space or even converted into an office.
Increase Curb Appeal
Sunrooms can dramatically increase the curb appeal of a home if they are visible from the road, which can draw in potential buyers and increase the overall value of a home. Many sunrooms, which typically are framed with considerable amounts of glass, can break up the staid appearance of the exterior of a home. This makes the home more attractive and creates a focal point that can set one home apart from the others on the street. Sunrooms add class and elegance that standard home additions cannot match.
Lower Energy Bills
Recent advances in window and insulation technology have made sunrooms surprisingly energy efficient. With increasing emphasis on green living, any addition to a home that potentially decreases energy usage and lowers energy bills will increase the home's resale value. Sunrooms can be warmed naturally during the winter, a benefit that is considerable in colder climates. Sunrooms also allow for natural lighting, which reduces utility costs. In order to be considered a benefit, however, the windows in the sunroom should be double-pane insulated and tightly sealed to prevent the leaking of heated or cooled air. Shades and window coverings can be added to reduce the amount of penetrating sunlight during warmer months. Modern sunrooms can be added that include special insulation and ventilation systems, making them energy efficient and usable year-round.
