  1. How Mary Kay Works

    • A Mary Kay consultant has two objectives: selling as much product as possible and getting other people to sign up as Mary Kay consultants. By getting others to become consultants, you get a percentage of the profits for the sales they make. It works much like a referral program; the more people that you sign into the company, the higher your rank in the company.

    Cold-Calling

    • One way a Mary Kay consultant gets new customers is by cold-calling. Consultants are often encouraged by their sales directors to set a goal of cold-calling a certain amount of people during the week.

    Meeting People

    • Mary Kay consultants also pass out business cards and catalogs everywhere they go. They grasp every opportunity to network. For example, at the grocery store they may pass their card to the cashier. Business cards are handed out much more than catalogs because catalogs are more expensive to purchase.

    Free Facials

    • Mary Kay consultants offer prospective clients free facials. These facials incorporate the Mary Kay line of facial products and makeup. The hope is that the prospective client will love the products used in the facial and will want to buy what they tried. Many consultants aim to have several facials a week.

    Mary Kay Parties

    • The consultant will encourage current clients to throw Mary Kay parties that include free facials, foot treatment or manicures. Once again, the hope is that the guests will like the products and buy them.
The consultant will give a speech at the end of the party to persuade the guests to become consultants, too.

Many consultants aim to do at least one party a week, usually on a Tuesday since it is a day when many women don't have evening plans.
