Whirlpool bathtubs are made of cast iron, composite or even acrylic materials. Cast-iron whirlpool bath tubs consist of high-gloss enamel, and they are available in several different colors. Whirlpool bathtubs made from cast iron are very heavy. Composite whirlpool bathtubs are constructed of polyester resin and fiberglass, making them very durable, low in cost, very easy to care for and very attractive. Acrylic whirlpool bathtubs are very durable as well. They are also easy to preserve, and are constructed in many shapes and sizes. Composite whirlpool bathtubs, however, actually weigh 20 percent less than acrylic and cast-iron types. Because composite whirlpool bathtubs weigh less, they are easier to install as well.

A whirlpool bathtub offers a great way to unwind and relax after coming home from a stressful day at work. First, you must first fill the bathtub with water, approximately 1 inch above the jet that is in the highest position. However, the water must remain approximately 1 inch below any and all controls. Before turning on the whirlpool bathtub, you must turn off all neck jets. There is a soft-touch control panel that is used to switch the whirlpool on or off. You alter the direction of the jets by adjusting the mechanism called the "eyeball." The quantity and force of the water flowing through the jets can be attuned by directing what is referred to as the "jet escutcheons" in the preferred direction. The quantity of air that flows into the water through the jets is adjusted via the air-control buttons. Some whirlpool-bathtub owners have in-line water heaters for the purpose of sustaining a certain temperature in the water. The in-line water-heater temperature feature is designed to sustain the water temperature by automatically turning on when the whirlpool pump is activated. It automatically switches to the "off" position when the pump is no longer activated.

A whirlpool bathtub will perform best when the plumbing has been performed correctly. Some whirlpool manufacturers believe that tough PVC, heated and bent, functions better than bendable PVC, and that the performance of the jets is also affected by how the water is dispersed from the pump's discharge to and through the jets. According to some whirlpool bathtub manufacturers, it is very important to minimize turbulence at the jets. The suction (intake) of the whirlpool bathtub system must not be too small if the unit is to have adequate pumping and suction power.
