From Quick Guide: All About Neoprene

    Types

  1. Fly-fishing waders are available in a variety of fabrics. Neoprene waders are designed to hug your body, and come in several thicknesses to keep you dry and protect you from the elements. Lightweight neoprene is approximately 3mm in thickness which is better for warmer days, and the heavyweight neoprene is approximately 7mm, sufficient for the chilliest of waters. Nylon waders are also an option, but they tend to rip easily, which is not a good thing when you are trying to stay dry. They may also cause you to sweat, and since nylon is not a breathable fabric, you may tend to become hot and damp. A final choice is Gore-Tex, which is a breathable fabric; it allows sweat to escape, and keeps you exceptionally dry. Gore-Tex is relatively new to the wader's scene, and quickly gaining a following.
  2. Styles

  3. Fly-fishing waders also come in several different sizes that are traditionally measured by height. Boot foot waders are chest high, and have built-in boots, eliminating the hassle of having to purchase and carry around waders and boots separately. Stocking foot waders are chest-high, but they do not have built in boots. What they do have is built-in neoprene socks that will effectively keep your feet dry while inside of a boot. Last but not least are the common hip waders. Hip high, with built in boots, these waders are sufficient for low rising streams and warmer weather.
  4. Cost

  5. Consider the costs when you are deciding on a pair of fly-fishing waders. You may want to minimize your investment if you are new to the fly-fishing sport, or just testing the waters. On the other hand, a seasoned angler may already have a particular type of waders in mind. Nylon waders are perfect for beginners and cost the least. Gore-Tex is priced quite steep, but is worth the investment for cold water fly-fishers. The neoprene waders are priced midway between the other two types, and sufficient for either expert or beginner.
  6. Be Prepared

  7. Waders are not indestructible, and their durability will be subject to the environment that they are worn in. Even the thickest neoprene is no match for jagged rocks, and sharp branches. And if the waders rip while you are on an outing, you will not be protected. Always carry a repair kit that is compatible with the type of waders that you have purchased.
  8. Waders for Women

  9. Fly-fishing is a sport that can be successfully enjoyed by both men and women. And women are no longer stuck wearing men's uncomfortable, oversize waders. Thank you, Cabela's. The famous sporting goods store now carries waders sized specifically with a woman's shape in mind.
