Flat Screen Rear Projection TVThe term "flat screen" refers to a physical property of a television, meaning that the monitor screen of the television is flat and not curved, like original cathode ray tube (CRT) TVs. Flat screen does not refer to a single technology for TVs. Flat screen TVs can have traditional CRT technology or even newer technologies such as LCD, DLP and plasma. Even if these TVs have more modern technology than CRTs, they are still relatively large and bulky. -
Flat panel TVs also have flat screens, but unlike flat screen TVs, they are lighter, thinner (usually less than four inches thick) and do not use cathode ray tubes. These TVs use modern technology including liquid crystal displays (LCDs), plasma, digital light processing (DLP) and electroluminescence to allow for a compact design and lighter weight.
- No matter what technology produces the image on the screen, flat screen TVs will be bulky and need bulky storage such as cabinets or deep entertainment centers. Flat panel TVs, on the other hand, are far more versatile because they take up less space. They can be placed on a TV stand, on a bookshelf, or even be hung on a wall.
