How Does a Business Analyst Spend a Workday?
-
Scheduling Clients
-
The job of a business analyst is to act as a liaison between IT systems operations and business operations. For a business analyst who works as an independent contractor (as most do), scheduling projects for different clients is a necessary daily part of the business. Not only must a business analyst spend time talking with clients on the business operations side, but the analyst must also have time to discuss the client's needs with the IT development team.
Observing/Compiling Information
-
During work for any particular client, part of a business analyst's day will be spent in observing the needs of the business, the flow of how the business operates and the systems in place to support the business structure. Additionally, an analyst might spend part of the day reviewing a client's policies and procedures.

Reviewing Reports and Analyzing Data
-
After the time spent in meetings, discussions, observation and compiling information, an analyst will need to take time to review notes and reports, determine which problems most affect the daily operations of the business, and develop reasonable solutions for those problems. Sometimes an analyst will be hired to help a business by providing a general overview of problems and solutions. At other times, an analyst will be hired for a specific project, such as the development of new software to meet a business's needs.
Writing Reports/Presentations
-
Once the analyst has spent adequate time in analyzing problems and developing solutions, the next time in the workday will be spent turning those problems and solutions into a readable, understandable report or presentation to use in the next meeting with clients. The analyst will need to provide an overview of potential solutions, how they will solve problems, and the steps necessary to implement the solutions. Financial estimates of the solution's cost might also be a pertinent part of the report, as well as the potential improvement in overall company performance once the solution is in place.
Meeting with Clients
-
Finally, once the work is complete and the report is written, the analyst will need to spend time meeting with clients. In these final meetings, the clients will have a chance to go over the reports with the analyst, ask questions, discuss options and have time to review the information privately before a final meeting with the analyst.
