- A water aerobics instructor is a fitness expert who specializes in teaching aqua aerobics to people of all ages and fitness levels. An instructor must be AEA (Aquatic Exercise Association) certified in order to be able to teach. In order to become certified, an instructor must display his knowledge of aquatic fitness by taking a 100-question exam. The exam is based on the AEA Manual with helpful preparatory classes also available. This certification is valid for two years and must be renewed every two years for the instructor to be able to continue working. It is also essential that a water aerobics instructor have current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) status.
- A water aerobics instructor spends a typical workday teaching water aerobics to a variety of different participants. An instructor may have several classes a day, including early morning classes, afternoon classes and evening classes with short breaks between each session. During each class, the instructor leads participants through the different types of exercises, supervises each participant to prevent injury, gives one-on-one training if needed, passes out weights or sets up equipment, regularly checks for signs of injury, distress or discomfort, caters certain exercise moves and intensities to the individual participants, provides exercise tips and guidelines throughout the session and instructs participants to monitor their heart rates and progress.
- Other duties taken on by a water aerobics instructor include coming up with new exercise routines that will continue challenging participants and encourage them to work harder. The instructor must be creative when planning a new routine and incorporate weights, music and alternating moves into the workout to prevent participants from getting bored or discouraged. Some workdays may be spent conducting one-on-one training with a participant who wants a more intense workout or someone who wishes to exercise in a more private setting.
