There are two basic options for setting up a flat-screen television. The television can be mounted on a wall or attached to a stand. Both have their advantages. Mounting the television provides eye-level viewing, which is the optimal angle for displaying your TV. It also requires less furniture, like an entertainment center or TV stand. Using a free-standing setup is less intrusive to the construction of your home. It also requires less people to set up.
- The wall mount requires attaching the hardware to a stud in the wall. LCD televisions are typically lighter; thus, you can generally get away with drilling into only one stud. Heavier plasma televisions require that the mount be drilled into at least two studs. Studs are typically 18 inches apart, so it is possible to mount your television to three studs.

Televisions come with screw holes on the back so that a wall mount can be utilized. The width and placement of the screw holes on the television and on the mounting bracket are typically standardized in order to make the installation easier.
Once the mounting arms are attached to the TV, the arms can be attached to the wall mount for securing hanging.
