A certified surgical technologist (or CST) is a medical professional who assists surgeons and other medical staff during surgical operations. Most jobs in this field exists in the many hospitals throughout the nation and the world.

Surgical techs are an integral part of preparing for surgery. It is the CST's job to both prepare the room and patient for the surgery. These duties include sterilizing and checking that all equipment is in working order. They are also in charge of transporting, shaving, disinfecting, and prepping the patient for the operation.

During the operation, a surgical technician assists the surgeon and his team wherever needed. This may include passing instruments to the surgeon. It may include counting supplies and instruments to be sure that nothing is left inside the patient. He may hold retractors, and he may prepare specimens to be sent to the laboratory.
What the do after a surgical operation

After surgery it is often the surgical technician's job to transport the patient back to his room. He may also clean and restock the operating room for the next surgery.
Education and Training

Becoming a surgical technician requires anywhere from 9 to 24 months of training. This will lead to either a certification or associates degree. These training programs can be found in everywhere, from community colleges to hospitals.
