    What is Topsoil?

The important thing to remember when planting vegetation is that good topsoil is essential for successful growing. Topsoil is rich in minerals and nutrients that plants need to grow.

Topsoil is the top two to eight inches of soil on the ground. It contains the highest concentration of microorganisms and organic matter. The majority of the Earth's activity involving biological soil occurs in the topsoil.

Topsoil is marketed for a variety of uses.
Topsoil is paramount in helping plants and trees grow because the trees and plants usually "dig" into the topsoil, where the roots become concentrated. The topsoil also is where vegetation gets most of the nutrients it needs to grow.

Because it is one of the soil layers on the surface of Earth, it is sometimes called A horizon. This particular layer forms from decaying organic matter and eroded materials' deposition. It also mixes minerals and composted material in addition to rich hummus, which results in the nutrition that plants and trees need to grow and survive.

If the Earth didn't have topsoil, then nearly no vegetation would grow and that would have dire consequences on the animals and humans that inhabit the Earth.
  4. Topsoil and Farming

  5. There are a wide variety of soil mixtures on the market today that are deemed as topsoil and sold as such. These types of topsoil are typically used for improving lawns and gardens. They also are an ideal way to grow plants in a controlled environment such as container gardens or for potted plants.

When planting a garden, for example, it's important to rotate the topsoil so that it retains its nutritional value. If it does not get rotated, it will eventually be stripped of any nutrients that is has. The loss of nutrients is known as topsoil erosion.

Farmers, in particular, understand the value of rotating soil to grow healthy crops. Those who do not adhere to environmentally safe practices such as rotating their soil will slowly kill off their topsoil. This is happening to farmers in some parts of the Midwest as well as Australia and Africa. These farmers are having to use many different fertilizers in an effort to get the soil to sustain and provide nutrients to their vegetation so that it can grow and produce crops. As their topsoil becomes more and more depleted, they are having to concoct formulations that are more complex in an attempt to restore and replace the soil's natural nutrient balance.

The topsoil in such cases can have its nutrients restored once farming has ceased, however, this can take many years to achieve.
