How Does a Mac Differ From a PC?

  1. The Basics

    • When looking at a Mac and a PC side by side, there are a few obvious differences. Macs are built for media programs. They are generally faster than PCs and because of this are able to keep up with all the graphics and sound that comes with these types of programs. PCs are more adept for word processing programs.

Most would say, after looking at both programs, that the Mac is easier to use. Its operating system has more help features that walk a person through certain processes. However, certain functions are complicated, and generally most would say they like the setup of the PC operating system, not because it is easier but because they understand how to use it.

    Hardware and Software

    • Mac is self-containing in its hardware. Macs are made by Apple and no one else. There are just a few models to select from such as the Mac Mini, Mac Pro or Mac Book. For a PC you have many choices in the way of companies, and as a result a multitude of options in laptops and desktops.

Software follows along the same lines. With PCs there are what seem like millions of programs to choose from, many which do the same functions, but with Macs there is generally one program for a certain need, and sometimes the program will fill more than one need. On the other hand, Macs tend to have issues doing certain things online due to the fact that the Internet is more PC friendly. Downloading music and movies are one example of something that is more difficult for a Mac user.

    Security

    • Security is one place where Macs and PCs differ greatly. Macs are generally considered to be safer in the area of computer viruses, where as PCs have been plagued with them for years. PCs have many programing flaws that computer hackers pride themselves on finding and exploiting.

Some feel that as Macs get more popular, hackers will target them more and we may find that Macs are not much safer that PCs.
