A training bike is a small children's bike that has two smaller training wheels on each side of the back wheel. These wheels attach to the bike by metal bars screwed onto the bike frame where the rear wheel meets it. The training wheels are spaced so that they stabilize the back of the bike. Training wheels are slightly off the ground to start with, and as the rider gets more confidence in his skills and needs less assistance, the wheels can reposition farther off the ground.
Stability
A training bike provides stability to new riders. The two smaller wheels attached to the back wheel prevent most falls, allowing the rider to learn to ride a bike without the added issue of balance.
Parent Benefits
Training bikes save parents from pushing their kids too far too fast when learning to ride a bike. They also prevent parents from having to buy two or more separate bikes for their child's progressing bike riding skills.
Confidence
Since training wheels are adjustable to different heights, children stay at a level until they're ready to try something a little harder. Letting the child decide when to move up ensures they are confident riding their bike.
Repositioning
To reposition training wheels, get two crescent wrenches. Find the spot where the training wheel attaches to the bike, where the frame and back wheel connect. Use one crescent wrench to loosen one screw, while holding the other screw still. On the side with the loosened screw, lift the training wheel up. Tighten the screw back, and then repeat the steps with the other side. Make sure both sides are equally off the ground and the screws are both tight.
Removal
Once a child is ready to ride the bike with only two wheels, remove the training wheels. All that's necessary to remove training wheels on most bikes is two crescent wrenches. To remove the training wheels, loosen the screw located at the back of the bike frame where it meets the back wheel. It may be necessary to use one crescent wrench to hold the screw on the other side still while loosening the screw. Take the screw off and remove the training wheel. Replace the screw on the post and tighten it. Repeat this on the other side to remove the other training wheel.
