- A wig maker is a skilled professional who uses real human or synthetic hair to make wigs and other hair pieces to be worn by different people for a variety of reasons. Wig makers are skilled in constructing wigs that look natural and that are also very durable. Wig makers are also commissioned by clients to make unique and custom pieces that perfectly fit the person's head and match their natural hair color. Wig makers may also produce toupees and hair extensions.
- A wig maker spends a typical workday constructing wigs using real or synthetic hair and other materials. In fact, making just one wig may take up an entire workday. The wig maker begins by choosing strands of real or synthetic hair and determining the length and style of the hair before beginning the wig making process. First, the wig maker lays out the strands of hair and sews them together in a predetermined hair style. Then, she creates the foundation of the wig using fortified string, a net or lace that will be attached to the inside of the wig. Strands of hair that have been previously sewn together are hooked into small openings in the wig's foundation. More and more strands are woven until the desired look is achieved.
- A wig maker will also spend some workdays consulting with clients and helping them achieve a uniquely desired look. Consultations may include measuring the circumference of the client's head in order to create a custom fit as well as match her natural hair color as closely as possible.
