An online RPG is a roleplaying video game in which multiple players participate simultaneously. The roleplaying part of the game usually call for players to create their own unique character, which has certain skills and abilities that grow and change with play, allowing the player to explore more of the world and defeat tougher in-game opponents. Because it is online, many players from around the world are logged into the game world at the same time and can team up to fight monsters, complete quests or battle one another.
How the Online Game Works

Every online RPG has several servers upon which it hosts play by, at times, thousands of different players. These servers act as online databases and store information about characters, location and the actions players take. This is similar to an online chatroom. You initiate in-game actions and your Internet connection sends this information to the game's server. Conversely, information from other players, monsters and locations is sent back to your computer. This is what makes the game come alive.

An online roleplaying game is different than other games you may have played on your computer or console system for several reasons. First, even if you have multiplayer games that allow you to play against others across an Internet connection, usually you are either joining or setting up your own game server. The quality of play depends on how fast your Internet connection is and there is usually a limit to the amount of players that can join. However, rarely is there a limit to the amount of players in an online roleplaying game because the game company hosts players on its own servers that have been optimized to ensure fast connection speed and a high quality of play.
Players do pay for this privilege, though, and most online roleplaying games charge a monthly subscription fee. This fee pays for bandwidth so that the servers run fast, improving game play, and for the periodic addition of new content to keep the subscribers playing a fresh and exciting game.
