How Does Laser Acne Removal Work?

The laser procedure for acne removal is a painless, non-invasive treatment with minimal side effects.
When the laser procedure is used as therapy for acne, the doctor will emit the laser over the affected areas (this kills the bacteria on the face). Then the laser is used to shrink the oil glands by pulsating the heat under the skin. (The oil glands contribute to acne breakouts, and reducing their size will in turn decrease the oil production). The procedure should stop the spread of acne to other areas of the face and reduce breakouts.
When the laser procedure is used to improve the scars associated with acne, a doctor will emit the laser over the affected areas and vaporize the unwanted tissue. This will promote new collagen growth of the skin cells (collagen is a protein that works with the elastin of the body to hold it together). The collagen is able to grow after receiving the laser treatments, and it also promotes the healing process. This will diminish the discolorations left by acne, which will improve the appearance of the face.
Some swelling or redness may occur after receiving either treatment but is completely normal. Darker skins have dealt with hyper-pigmentation (a darkening of the skin), as a side effect. The procedures can be done under local anesthesia, and the treated areas should be protected with products that guard against UVA and UVB rays.

The cost of a laser acne removal procedure can vary based on the treatment needed. For minor scars the procedure can range from $500 to $600 for each 20-minute session. The cost could be substantially higher for severe cases. After receiving an initial consultation from a dermatologist, she should be able to estimate the total costs.
In addition to being concerned about the cost, candidates may want to ask the doctor about his experience with the laser treatment equipment, (if he is not a dermatologist or plastic surgeon). There are no federal regulations, as of yet, on who can perform laser procedures, so be sure to have answers before committing to treatment.
Most users of this treatment notice results after one procedure, however, some patients have up to three sessions before noticing improvement.
