  1. Hazmat (hazardous material) suits function as protective clothing to shield its wearer from hazardous materials such as biological agents, chemicals and high temperatures.
  2. A Hazmat suit works via its construction of appropriate materials for its intended use. For chemical agents, the suit utilizes barrier material like PVC, rubber, Tyvek or Teflon. For nuclear material, the suit uses radioactive shielding in its lining and a breathing filter to stop inhalation of radioactive particles. For biological threats, Hazmat suits are completely sealed environments with breathing supplies. For fire exposure, Hazmat suits use insulation and materials that will reflect the heat and provide burn retardation.
  3. Hazmat suits fall into two groups: gas-tight and splash protection. Splash protection suits prevent contact with liquid dangers. Gas-tight suits protect the user from gases or dust inhalation. They are vapor-tight and usually utilize a SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus).
