Mac or Windows users can purchase and download this program off the Internet or buy a disc copy at any office supply store. Owners will need at least 40 megabytes of hard-drive space, plus 256 megabytes of RAM. Once the download begins, choose "Typical" installation and follow the onscreen directions. Be sure to register the program immediately, as StuffIt programs update regularly.

StuffIt is a powerful file compression system that takes your high-density files--such as graphic, photo or music files--and squeezes them down to size. Windows users can access the StuffIt program, once its downloaded, directly from their Microsoft Office programs, and with one click, can compress large files for storage or electronic transfer. Files can be compressed up to 98 percent, and some JPEG or multimedia files up to 50 percent. This is vital in allowing users to send files via the Internet to friends or businesses.

Advanced computer users will understand that StuffIt compresses files by identifying blocks of repeated codes and replacing them with "defining codes." For example, if a code consists of something like, "286,286,286,286..." a compression program may shorten the code to "55,000x286." This shortens the code line and therefore compresses the file.

StuffIt provides several options for users to create compatible files for transfer. You can convert zip files or create or open .sit, .exe and .mime files, just to name a few. This makes StuffIt perfect for a business that needs to send files to different users who have different programs.
  6. Storing Files

StuffIt provides a backup utility and an Indexing option that allow users to create storage CDs or data files, affording an easy way to quickly locate and open needed files. Indexing means never having to browse through the whole disc or file to find what you need; you can simply look at the logical index to ascertain if your information is on that particular disc or memory stick.

Photoshop files can often be quite large due to the heavyil graphic nature of the software. StuffIt downloads a tool to the program that makes it easy to compress your work to share electronically or store on your computer. Artwork and photos take up a lot of space on your hard drive, so compressing unused files is vital to keeping your computer running fast and efficiently.
