How Does a Pineapple Fast Work?
  1. Performing a Pineapple Fast

    • A pineapple fast is done for a minimum of three days and for a maximum of 10 days. Only fresh, ripe pineapples are used, and a minimum of three pineapples should be consumed for the length of the fast. In addition to the pineapple, water, ginger, wormwood tea, figs, raw pumpkin seeds, and raw almonds can also be eaten. Because chewing large amounts of pineapple is often irritating to the mouth and gums, creating a juice from fresh pineapple may be better for some people. To create pineapple juice, simply add one ripe, peeled pineapple to some water in an electric juicer and then drink the juice within one hour.

Health Benefits of a Pineapple Fast

    • Pineapple fasts are believed to help a number of physical conditions, including gastrointestinal disorders and gallstones. Pineapple fasts are also believed to cleanse and tone the pores of the skin and lungs, improving elasticity and respiration. Pineapple fasts work to destroy tapeworms and other parasites inside the intestines, and pineapple juice has been shown to reduce high blood pressure when used short term and in moderate amounts. A pineapple fast also works by flushing the body of toxins and allowing the gastrointestinal system time to rest.

    Bromelain

    • Bromelain, which is found in pineapples, is a mixture of protein-digesting enzymes. These enzymes have been shown to aid digestion, improve gastrointestinal functioning and reduce inflammation. Bromelain is approved by Germany's Commission E as an anti-inflammatory for use in the treatment of sinus swelling due to surgery or injury. Bromelain may also help with pain, osteoarthritis, gout, bruising and autoimmune disorders, and is being explored as a complementary treatment for cancer patients. Bromelain is found in all parts of a pineapple plant, and is therefore consumed in large doses during a pineapple fast. If less bromelain is desired during a pineapple fast, you should avoid eating the stem of the pineapple as it contains the greatest concentration of bromelain.
